No mercado atual globalizado, a busca de uma vantagem tecnológica que permita ao seu usuário competir de uma maneira eficaz, manter-se de uma maneira sustentável, obtendo lucro e reinvestir no seu negócio, a automação industrial passou a ser item básico desse processo. No ramo da industria do petróleo, no segmento do refino, onde as margens de lucro são historicamente pequenas, a otimização de recursos faz-se imprescindível. As inovações na área de processo em si são poucas, ficando para as áreas de controle de processo a responsabilidade na redução de custos. O entendimento dos processos de inovação que ocorreram a partir da revolução industrial podem ajudar a nos situarmos no contexto atual, identificando as inovações que podem agregar valor a cadeia produtiva. Notadamente nos últimos anos com o avanço na eletrônica digital passamos a ter novas ferramentas nas áreas de controle de processo e manutenção que associadas com sistemas de comunicação baseados em protocolos abertos de redes industriais, culminando no conceito de redes fieldbus.

In the globalized current market, the search of a technological advantage that its user allows to compete in an efficient way, to remain itself in a sustainable way, getting profit and to reinvest in its business, the industrial automation started to be basic item of this process. In the branch of the industry of the oil, in the segment of the refining, where the profit edges are in the history small, the otimized of resources becomes essential. The innovations in the area of process in itself are few, being for the areas of process control the responsibility in the reduction of costs. The agreement of the innovation processes that had occurred from the industrial revolution can help in pointing out them in the current context, identifying the innovations that can add value the productive chain. Detaching in the last years with the advance in the digital electronics we start to have new tools in the areas of process control and maintenance that associates with based systems of communication in open protocols of industrial nets, culminating in the concept of nets fieldbus.
